London trip

w/c 28/03/22
This week I begun my initial ideas for my Norse mythology and weather project. I started with a collage technique which helped me come up with original designs of famous individuals and creatures, I used inspiration from an artist called Jeffery Alan love, annoyingly he has already created a book about Norse mythology using is style of art work so I will only take slight inspiration from him and not be solei focused on his work. Using this artist and my own initiative I created my own scenery using blue crap paper and plain white paper for the clouds, I then began creating Mjord (the world serpent) and attached him behind a huge wave and made him a pop up. Finally I added Thor to the mix making him come down from a lightning bolt and striking Mjord.  I really enjoyed creating this Norse scene and then creating it into a stop motion short, I have shown my own originality and creative initiative, using colour and texture as well as composition very well. If i could improve I would recreate Thors lightning bolt and how Thor descends from it.

250 WORD REFLECTION
The intent and purpose of my art is to show people how people from Northen countries either still do and used to worship the gods of weather like Thor, and to show the beauty of these gods and how they were displayed through the ages.

EVALUATION

I have responded to the theme in a personal way as I have always been interested in Vikings. I read a lot of Marvel Comics with Thor in it as he is my favourite superhero, Vikings is also my favourite tv show which goes into the Vikings deep connection with their gods.

I have applied ethics to my artwork by not copying other artists work and keeping every piece of art as original as possible. I intend to keep my work from being derivative. My work communicates my ideas very well in showing the legendary Nordic myths through my artwork. Both models I have created have been based off Thor and effectively show the myth of Thor vs the frost giant and Thor vs the world serpent. I learnt more about how the Vikings connected their gods with the weather for example Ragnarök (the Nordic judgment day) happened because global warming caused many volcanos to irrupt around the planet 1,200 years ago. Also, the fight between the world serpent and Thor happened when the storms were as angry as you could imagine, I used this legend to inform my work as I though it connected the best to weather. I have used research into artists like Jeffery Allen Love to effectively support my project by taking inspiration of the way he uses shadows and shape in his artwork. I have researched my chosen specialist pathway (diorama) effectively by producing being able to produce two pieces of different Norse myths.

I used to watch Vikings as primary research to my project as I learned a lot about Vikings through it. I effectively used it as I discovered how the Vikings boats looked which I used in one of my pieces, I found out how weather was precepted and myths like Thor vs Jormungand (the world serpent). If I had the chance to I would have liked to have gone to a museum that showcased the vikings2 and would take photographs around it to inform my project further.

I effectively used a technique where I would draw in many different ways how I think the Norse gods looked like; I did these drawing in a very simplistic form until I found a design which I wanted to use. After creating what I thought would be my final piece I realised it wasn’t as professional as I wanted so I begun creating another with a better material than card (foamboard). Foamboard abled me to create a fine cut and a clear white box. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to finish this refined piece so I went back to my first diorama and took a professional photo, where I used composition and scaling effectively, to use as my final outcome.

My other research was used effectively as I found out about the Viking capital Kattegat and used the landscape and terrain of city in my final diorama. If I could do things differently, I would also research into weather and how different ways lightning could look coming off Thor’s hammer.

I used a collage method to generate character designs and produced many designs with it. This worked well as I was able to create many designs and then was able to select my favourite at the end. If I could do things more different, I would do more designs of different characters other than just focusing on Thor.

I am pleased with the quality of my final solution however I hoped i could've finished my final diorama and used that as the final solution.

The most successful part of my outcome is how I was able to create good scaling and composition with my photograph and captured it like the boat was sailing off into the water.

If I did this again I would put more time into photoshopping the image to make it as realistic as possible.

I expected to get one of my characters into the photo of the outcome, but it wouldn’t have fitted with the photo, however the photo on its own showed weather very well as you can see the storm surround the boat.

I have used composition and scaling skilfully and imaginatively by taking the photo at an angle which made it seem like the boat was floating off into a storm. If I could do things differently, I would’ve liked to add a bit of texture around the boat so it seems like the boat is crashing into the waves.

My work is dynamics as it shows an old Norse myth in a fun and creative way. I’ve used material such as cardboard and paper to make the characters, I would ink the paper and then glue it on to the cardboard to give the characters a more effective look than just cardboard. I also used a hot glue gun to still everything together. I Will refine my work and use foamboard instead of cardboard as it’s a lot more professional and easier to get a clean cut. My reflective practice discusses each piece I have reflected on effectively; however, I need to reflect to every piece I have done if not most. After a week I have now reflected on every piece of work I have done giving a good response showing what I did well and how I could improve next time. I have used recycled cardboard for my project as well as recycled paper, However I could have used a more sustainable way to stick everything together. I have met all the deadlines and completed all the tasks to the best of my ability. Next time I will try to stay on top of reflective practice as I am not doing is consistently enough. I have learnt to do ongoing planning and organising in my work so that at the end of the unit I don’t have to cram everything I’ve missed out in. Next time I must plan enough time in each day to do reflective practice on the practical work I’ve produced. My website is presented a lot better than my book and on the next project I will make sure that my book looks nice and neat as well.  My audience will be people interested in the history of the Vikings, or anyone who is indulged by the history of our planet The operational context of my work is 2d and 3d illustration, I have used this effectively as I’ve created a story using this. I could also present my work as a set design and show how if scaled up it could be used in theatre. If I could add or change anything in my work, I would try to add more texture to my work so that it wasn’t too flat surfaced and more towards 3D instead of it being both 2D and 3D. My personal goals as a creative practitioner is to effectively create and present work responding to the theme that’s been selected, I strive to archive refined work that I enjoy creating and other people enjoy. This project has showed me multiple different ways I can present and make work, it has showed me how to research thoroughly and create pieces that I enjoy making. To keep moving to this goal I will continue making work I enjoy making, making sure I continue to research thoroughly and making sure my work isn’t half hearted and is well refined.
