Olaus Magnus

ARTIST RESEARCH

Olaus Magnus uses woodcuts and the norse gods to inform his work. His work will help inform my project as I will use his work to inform my 3D work. He uses multiple lines in his pieces to create texture and form which makes his work look realistic yet simple. His work links to the theme weather as it shows the weather gods having an affect on the northmen journeys across the sea. He incorporates boarders surrounding the wood cuts, these boarders are majestic and curved. I like his work because of how they're created and in the time they were made (1490-1557).

ARTIST RESEARCH

Jack Kirby

Jack Kirby was a comic artist for marvel. he mainly focused on the mythological side of marvel and the norse gods. Thors design was very colorful and old fashioned, even though his work was quite mainstream he still kept the vikings to gods connection as he did panels where Thor fought with the vikings. Jack Kirby's work connects t the theme weather as he designs Thor with his classic lightning hammer (Mjor). I like Jack Kirby's designs because of how color and texture is used and will use these same colors in my own design of Thor for my 2D work.

ARTIST RESEARCH

Russel Dauterman

Russel Dauterman is a newer artist to the designs of the weather heroes in marvel and follows in the foot steps of Jack Kirby, However Russels work is constructed in a more modern way and has more modern designs. The visual language like color is more dim and dark and the texture is more stable and sophisticated. His work is also more detailed and less simple which gives the characters a more real design. Russels work connects to weather as he shows clouds, lightning and fire through the designs of his characters. I will take his texture aspect so that in 2D I will have a stronger and cleaner finish on my piece.

ARTIST RESEARCH

P Craig Russell

P Craig Russell the artist of the comic series Norse mythology shows how the Norse gods connect with Midgard (earth), he does this using weather like rainbows, the vikings interpreted this as a gateway to Valhalla. His work uses a variety of color, composition and shadowing. I Love the character designs of the characters in this comic series and will look to use these designs to give ideas for my own characters.

ARTIST RESEARCH

Jeffrey Alan Love

Jeffery Alan Love Is an artist who specialises in using strong contact and shadows as well as texture in his work. He creates characters such as northmen and gods which relates to my project extremely well. He prints his work and uses dark colours, he also sometimes creates his work digitally too create a finer finish. I will use his work to influence my work by using a variety of shapes to create his character designs.

ARTIST RESEARCH

Ben Hibbon

Ben Hibbon is the creator of the short story of The Three Brothers which appears on the deathly hallows (Harry Potter). I find his style in this very unusual and mysterious as he has used contrast to perfection, making the characters shillouetes and the background like a page from a historical book. I will use parts of this short to influence my work, such as the layout of it being on a book as I find that idea original and different.

NORSE MYTHOLOGY IN TV AND FILM

Thor In The
MCU

Norse Gods In
Vikings

Compare And
Contrast

These two scenes both show the work of god and weather, in the marvel clip (the destruction of Asgard) it shows Thor using his lightning powers to beat the goddess of death and allowing enough time for him, Loki and the gallery to escape. Loki also resurrected the fire god sorter to destroy asgard, this shows how the element fire ca destroy an entire world. In the other clip from the tv series Vikings, it shows a group of Northam traveling through the ocean in a heavy storm. one of the northman was preying to the god of thunder Thor to stop the storm, as this was happening one of the viking girls saw Jormungandr (the world serpent) then soon after the girl disappeared indicating that Jormungandr took this young girl from the ship which could have been a sacrifice so the others could stay alive. The two scenes are very different as the MCU scene is unrealistic and mainstream and the vikings scene is slightly more realistic.

CONSIDERATION OF THE ETHICAL AND ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT OF MY PROJECT

In my work I have to consider the ethical issue of copyright. I cannot copy other artists' work directly. I may take inspiration from artists like Jeffery Alan Love and Marvel artists but I don't want to be derivate as it is considered ethically wrong.

I also have to consider an environmental issue. A group of archaeologists, linguists and religion and climate experts believed that inscriptions of the Rök Stone, suggests Vikings were concerned about a climate catastrophe 1,200 years ago (Derrier and Savage, 2020). The Vikings witnessed climate change which may have inspired a myth called Ragnarok. My work explores weather in Norse mythology. If I had more time for this project, I would create a stronger link between climate change and the weather in Norse mythology to raise awareness in my audience. I would want to show them that climate change has always been and continues to be a threat to everyday life.

How different Artists Present there work

jack Kirby

In the Jack Kirby exhibition his work is presented on plain surface's so that the colour in his illustrations stand out. Some of his illustrations are printed on a canvas, sized up and placed on the wall while other illustrations are enclosed behind a glass cabinet for people to peer over and view. I like the way his work is presented as it shows off the colouring of his work and the pieces that are broader are increased in size to show that huge powerful in your face effect.

lotte reiniger

Lotte Reinigers art exhibition shows her silhouette films through a projector or a large screen, it is presented like this because her work is 4D, her work is showed effectively as you can stand there and watch here short films as the silhouettes move behind the glass. Each of her pieces also have a brief description of what the films about underneath the piece.

Jeffrey Alan love

Jeffery Alan Loves work is presented by taking photos of the pages from his book, this is effective as it makes the viewer of the photos want to buy that book so they can have the feeling themselves of reading it. I like how he presents his work as its very raw which is very indulging.

CHOSEN SPECIALIST PATHWAY RESEARCH

My chosen specialist pathway I have selected to base my work with is a diorama. A diorama is a 3D scene which showcases a still of something that is happening in a way that looks real. I am using this pathway as i believe it can show weather better than any other technique whilst also using my idea of Norse mythology.

KATTERGAT RESEARCH

Kattergat is not a real place but is showed as the viking capital in the tv show Vikings. It sits on the shores of southern Denmark and was used as the city of power. Overtime many viking kings ruled here however Ragnar was the one who built up this great viking city.
